Awareness Training: a powerful coaching approach

If we were to sit down and soberly make a list of things we should be doing NOW to improve our lot most of us would come up with some really good suggestions. We'd also notice we were probably doing very few of them.

Why is that? Why do we, in our heart of hearts, know what's in our best interests and yet stolidly ignore our own silent counsel?

Over the years how often have you tried to motivate yourself? What complex strategies and deals have you done with yourself to try and get stuff done? And how often do you subconsciously undermine even your very best efforts to be virtuous? We've all been there.

So what's the solution? Of all the approaches I've tried over the years there is only one that works for me as a life strategy and that's some form of awareness training:

The key to real change is simple: it's to be unconditionally aware of what has happened and what is going on now; what we would like to happen and what the consequences would be, good and bad. From this awareness change naturally emerges but only when it is appropriate and supportable. Anything more than that, in my experience, is overcooking it.

My coaching is based around this principle and includes basic awareness training. We'll only start making action plans once we are happy that a clear and natural direction has emerged. That way you can trust that the changes that are made are the right ones and they will last.
